Hilton International

Background

Hilton International operates over 400 hotels, with some 250 branded Hilton, more than 150 under the Scandic brand plus 15 luxury Conrad hotels, under a joint venture agreement with Hilton Hotels Corporation. In 2002, Hilton International outlined an aggressive e-commerce strategy to localize a series of websites for its largest source markets: UK, Germany and Japan. In addition, local language websites were to be developed for the key Scandinavian countries for the Hilton owned Scandic brand.

Challenge

Technical Integration with Existing Architecture – Hilton International delivers rate and property information through a complex and highly customized architecture, which relies on Interwoven’s TeamSite CMS and Oracle databases to manage dynamic global content. Any solution for the company’s multilingual sites would need to integrate seamlessly with these existing technologies.

  • Aggressive Timelines– Once the e-commerce strategy was developed, Hilton set aggressive timelines for the completion of the company’s multilingual sites. All four new sites were scheduled to launch between June and October of 2003.
  • Large Volumes– Completion of the project involved the translation and editing of over 2.5 million words of content and over 25,000 individual content files.
  • Process Integration– Content authors and managers from around the world required an efficient mechanism for submitting content, adapting content and delivering feedback to Hilton International headquarters. The over-arching operational objective for Hilton International was to support local properties centrally without inflating headcount or relinquishing vital local input. In addition, the Hilton solution required a cost effective method to handle content edits and additions once the initial build of the multilingual sites was complete.

Solution

Epic's solution for Hilton International integrated best-of-breed professional language services with the Hilton International web content management platform via GlobalLink.

  • GlobalLink Installation– GlobalLink is a multilingual content management application designed to automate the most tedious and time-consuming tasks associated with the creation and synchronization of multilingual content. With custom adaptors for TeamSite and Oracle, GlobalLink was installed and configured in only two days to monitor, select and route content for localization without disrupting the source content workflow or requiring extensive IT support for transferring content to and from more than 5,000 content repositories.
  • Global Content Management with Fewer Resources– GlobalLink gives managers a concise picture of the initiative to the file level so that any deviation from the localization schedule can be identified and remedied immediately. Moreover, by reducing the time between approval stages (budget review, internal linguistic review, legal review, etc.), GlobalLink dramatically compresses the timeline of the entire localization initiative.
  • Scalable Outsourced Language Support – By outsourcing their language support needs, Hilton International quickly deployed a team of professional linguists and project managers who are experienced in delivering the specifications of large global initiatives. After the initial build, Hilton will have the same resources available on-call through a master services agreement so the company will always know that their multilingual initiative is fully supported.
